ABOUT PCED
If you’re experiencing persistent, unexplained eye pain, swelling of the eye, sensitivity to light, pain with blinking, or painful eye movements, you may have persistent corneal epithelial defect, or PCED.
This rare condition occurs when the outer layer of the cornea fails to heal within a normal, 10- to 14-day timeframe, despite standard treatments. PCED is often caused by underlying conditions like Sjögren’s syndrome and neurotrophic keratitis. It can also occur after eye trauma. Only a healthcare professional can properly diagnose PCED.
Individuals with any of the symptoms listed above, or with a diagnosed eye wound that has been unresponsive to standard treatment for at least 2 weeks, may be eligible for a new clinical trial.
ABOUT THE TRIAL
This study is evaluating the safety and efficacy of a once-weekly topical gel treatment for children and adults aged 2 years and older with PCED. This is a unique opportunity for people with PCED to help advance medical research.
The study is actively enrolling participants for once-weekly treatment and includes:
- A screening period
- A treatment period (up to 8 weeks)
- A follow-up period (4 weeks)
- An open-label treatment period (up to 8 weeks)
Potential side effects previously reported may include eye pain, headache, corneal epithelium defect, white or yellow discharge at the corners of the eyes, and/or an ocular condition called symblepharon.
